Why are there not many big auto insurance companies operating in Massachusetts?

I moved from NY and need to find an auto insurance company. AllState and State Farm are not doing business here. I don'-t want Geico or Mutual Liberty because of bad experience with them. Are the small local businesses reliable? Thank you.

Mass. has strange insurance regulations and only allows "managed competition" hence many companies don't want to do business there. Amica is big, as is Liberty Mutual (I hate them too).

Until a year or so ago, the auto insurance rates in Massachusetts were set by the state, and insurance companies were NOT allowed to refuse to write a policy for someone. The insurance companies were losing a ton of money in Massachusetts, and most pulled out decades ago. As of a few years ago, there were maybe SEVEN auto insurance companies writing in the state. So, recent regulations have "opened" the market for pricing, so that insurance companies could charge their own rates. But most carriers have no faith, that Massachusetts won't go back to the old way - making them sell insurance for way under the cost of claims - so aren't going to go back into MA any time soon. There are several small regional carriers in MA that do a great job - Amica, Hanover, Commerce, etc. You should probably talk to a local agent, who can give you multiple quotes at once.Source(s):Former MA Agent

Allstate now does business in MA. I work for a competitor and just handled a claim for one of our insureds who was involved in an accident with a MA Allstate customer.

What auto insurance gives the cheapest full covarge becuase my friend thats a guy says its 4000 dollars a year?
With all due respect, this gets asked many times every day and there's no answer to it... you can't get a quote or a best insurer from here....So you want to shop around for insurance just like you are doing when buying a car or anything else.

Where can I find the best auto insurance quotes online?
I’ve had the AARP Hartford’s comprehensive insurance for over 10 years now and I can safely say I’ve never had a problem with them. I’ve always found their rates to be reasonable (locked in for an entire year) and their service to be smooth and easy. I’d recommend you visit their website for...

Planning to move to Edmonton, AB from Ontario, need advice please!?
I'm not sure from where in Ontario you're moving from but reading your posts you knew about the Sleeping Giant so are you maybe from the area?I moved to Edmonton from that area 11 years ago and my daughter moved to Calgary. I can tell you from first hand experience that winters here are nowhere...

Does anyone know where I can get a 1 month contract with an auto insurance provider?
You can't. Each state sets the minimum contract time, and the minimum contract time in ANY state is six months. The good news is, if you cancel the insurance before the six months is up, you can get a partial refund of the insurance.Source(s):agent, 21+ years

Whitch insurance company would you choose? What company is better for auto insurance?
How do you define better?State Farm has, by far, the lowest complaint ratio. 21st Century used to be owned by AIG before the bailout (then they sold it).I'd look heavily at pricing, but if all other things are equal, I'd go with State Farm.
