Can I get an auto insurance without owning a car?

Over the next couple of weeks, I'-ll be renting a car. Since the insurance from rental companies is so expensive, I'-m planning to get my own liability insurance and use it with the rental vehicle... can I do that? I do not own a car! Also, what is the best insurance company for me, I'-m 23/male/texas with a clean record.

The car will already have an insurance cover, and this insurance company will be the company of choice as far as the hire firm is concerned. They are hardly likely to agree to your cheaper insurance cover.

Most insurance companies offer a "non-owners policy" for people who don't own a car but occasionally drive or rent a car. Non-owners policies usually cover an insured with liability, medical payments, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Non-owners policies usually don't insure for comprehensive, collision, towing reimbursement, or rental reimbursement coverage. Also, some credit cards offer liability and collision coverage when you use their card for the rental.

I doubt it's possible.

Cars are insured not people. If you don't own a car, you can't insure it. Rental car companies will offer insurance to you at the time of rental, it's expensive but in your case you should buy it. Most (but not all) car rental companies won't rent to you if you are under 25

I don't think you can do that. I think you need to go with their insurance.

since you are 23 I doubt you can rent a car as most places you have to be 25, but IF you can find someplace to rent to you need a non owners policy. any local agent can write it for you. understand its ONLY liability, so you are NOT protecting yourself from any damage that is caused to the rental. you would STILL need to take out their insurance to cover the rental car.Source(s):Agent
